Noninvasive 'vacuum cleaner plants’ are affixed to floats and temporarily floated. Plants grow hydroponically taking up high levels of Phosphorus and Nitrogen from the water column thereby reducing the overall concentration. Fresh Lake™Floats are removed at the end of the growing season and plant inserts are returned for analysis, composting, and sterilization of the reusable grow medium. Clients receive a certificate detailing the amount of P and N removed from water and CO2  from air. Everyone cheers and life on the pond is wonderful once more.

Cyanobacteria is caused by excess nutrients in water. In most lakes and ponds, Phosphorus is the "limiting nutrient", with cyanobacteria occurring at concentrations over 40 micro-grams per liter. The average concentrations for ponds that are green with cyanobacteria is generally between 50-120 micro-grams per liter. Its all about reducing the overall concentration. While its important to reduce the inflow, we still need to work collaboratively to extract excess nutrients already dissolved in the water and sediment.

The good news is that concentration levels between the tipping point and cyanobacteria blooms rendering a watershed toxic are often in the parts per billion. This means that taking out even a small amount of nutrients can have a huge impact. In numbers, its sometimes, like, .0000000001%. The whole watershed doesn't need to be cleaned. A small change that can make a big difference.
